About Backyard Biosecurity Basics – Education
Backyard Biosecurity Basics – Education is a small, Ohio-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing clear, accessible, and practical education on general biosecurity principles for backyard and hobby livestock operations. Our focus is on helping animal owners understand why biosecurity matters and how everyday practices can reduce disease risk for animals, people, and neighboring farms.
The organization provides education only. We do not offer consulting services, farm inspections, veterinary advice, enforcement activities, advocacy, or commercial products. All materials are designed to be informational, non-prescriptive, and grounded in real-world conditions commonly encountered by small-scale livestock keepers.
Educational Scope
Our educational content addresses broad biosecurity concepts applicable to backyard and small-scale operations, including:
- General biosecurity principles and risk awareness
- Species-specific considerations for poultry, waterfowl, goats, sheep, cattle, swine, rabbits, camelids, and bees
- The role of wildlife, including cervids, as potential disease vectors
- Practical considerations relevant to Ohio’s agricultural environment and regulatory landscape
Content is intended to complement, not replace, guidance from veterinarians, extension services, and regulatory authorities.
Our Mission
Our mission is to improve understanding of biosecurity at the backyard and hobby-farm level through plain-language education, realistic examples, and respect for the practical constraints faced by small animal keepers. By improving awareness and understanding, we aim to support healthier animals, safer communities, and more resilient local agriculture.
Independence and Legal Separation
The organization’s founder owns and operates a privately run Ohio farm (Grey Barn Farm). Backyard Biosecurity Basics – Education is a separate legal entity and:
- Does not operate any farm or agricultural business
- Does not promote, endorse, or advertise any farm or commercial agricultural operation
- Does not receive direct or indirect financial benefit from any farm or agricultural enterprise
Educational materials are developed independently and are not influenced by any private farming operation.
Support and Printed Materials
Backyard Biosecurity Basics – Education is not actively seeking donations at this time and does not engage in fundraising activities as part of its current operations.
The organization is, however, open to informational discussions regarding opportunities that would allow for the printing and distribution of existing educational materials at public agricultural events, such as county and state fairs, 4-H programs, FFA events, and similar educational venues. Any such discussions are limited to supporting the dissemination of already-developed, non-prescriptive educational content and do not involve services, consulting, advocacy, or commercial activity.
